An investigation is ongoing onto the tragic shooting death on the set of Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust.’ The actor shot what he thought was a prop gun and accidentally killed a cinematographer. Since then we’ve heard stories of budget cuts, union drama, and irresponsible handling of firearms. Now, we’re hearing lead armor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was inexperienced, and once gave an unchecked firearm to an 11-year-old. Here is Gutierrez-Reed from her now-deleted TikTok account.
Hannah is the daughter of experienced Hollywood armorer Thell Reed. Prior to her first gig on The Old Way with Nicolas Cage, she questioned if she was ready for the job, saying that loading blanks was the scariest thing to her. Hannah then realized it’s a “pretty sweet gig.” Of her new career, Hannah told a podcast: “It was a really badass way to start off a really long and cool career, I’m hoping. I was really nervous about it at first, and I almost didn’t take the job because I wasn’t sure if I was ready, but doing it — it went really smoothly.”

Though, maybe not that smoothly. The Daily Beast reports on the set of The Old Way, Gutierrez-Reed allegedly gave an UNCHECKED weapon to an 11-year-old actress. A source also told The Beast that Gutierrez-Reed would recklessly wave guns around.
On the set of Rust, there were two other incidents of guns being accidentally discharged by crew members. That source described Gutierrez-Reed to The Beast as “inexperienced” and “green.“
Firearms expert Stephen Gutowski calls this incident a breach in safety protocol, adding “it’s beyond comprehension why live ammunition was put in this situation and unsafely used.”
An investigation is ongoing into what looks to be a tragic accident.
